Speaker 1:

Hallelujah. So welcome to this time where we share the Word of God. I want us to begin a section of teaching.

Speaker 1:

My topic will be understanding and practicing fasting, understanding and practicing fasting. Understanding and practicing fasting Because our understanding is not clear, we are afraid we are denied or we withdraw away from a spiritual discipline which God has ordained in the scripture for his people. Fasting is something that is practiced by almost all religions and all cultures of the world, but when we come to the church, because of the hidden power that there is in fasting, the enemy has kept this like a secret. So I want you to stay with me, whether you are listening to this through podcast or through the website or through YouTube. Please stay with me, because some of the things that you will learn, they are for your own benefit, for your own good as a person, not because you are a Christian, but because we need this teaching. Let me read with you Matthew, chapter 6. I'll read verse 16, 17, and 18. And then we will come back to these verses down as we continue with our teaching. Matthew, chapter 6, verse 16, 17, and 18,. Jesus says, moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites with a sad countenance, for they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but your Father who sees in the secret place, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. Those are the words of Jesus when he is speaking about fasting. But let's define what is fasting. What is fasting? Because my desire is that we may understand, because when we do things with understanding, we are strengthened in whatever we do.

Speaker 1:

What is fasting Now? Fasting is abstinence from food for the purpose of seeking God in prayers. I am giving not a dictionary definition, but a biblical definition. It is abstinence from food for the purpose of seeking God in prayer. It may include emptiness from water and or other things of this life, but fasting, by its very definition, has to do with food. When one abstains from food, they feel hungry. When one abstains from water, they feel thirsty. These are two different physiological functions and senses. Let me break that one down.

Speaker 1:

When we are talking about fasting, it is primarily about food, and that you will understand for a moment is revolutionary, because every time we are talking about fasting, people many times and even me for a long time I thought when you are fasting, you must also avoid water, and because of that many people are afraid and then we are robbed of what is supposed to be so beneficial. But fasting has to do with food, specifically solid food. We'll come back in a moment. As we continue, continue you will understand why should we fast. Let's go to that. We finish with the definition what is fasting?

Speaker 1:

Why we should fast is because Jesus expects his followers to fast. Jesus expects One. He set an example for us by fasting himself at the beginning of his ministry. Two Jesus fasted and if we are followers of Jesus then we should fast. That's the number one reason there. If you go to Luke, chapter 4, I know we know this, so I'll just read it very fast, you don't have to turn it Luke, chapter 4, verse 1 and 2. Listen verse 1 and 2. Listen it says and afterward, when they had ended, he was hungry.

Speaker 2:

Okay.

Speaker 1:

Very important. This verse clarifies for us the kind of fasting which Jesus Christ undertook. We see there that he fasted for 40 days and when they were ended, the Bible says he was hungry. So we know Jesus passed from food, but he had water. Jesus passed from eating food, but he had water. He was taking water. How do we know that he had water? Because the Bible says he was hungry. At the end of the 40 days Jesus was hungry. It doesn't say he was thirsty. Do you see that? Jesus ate no food, but it doesn't talk about drinking no water, doesn't talk about drinking no water. How else do we know that he? At the end, it says he was hungry. He doesn't say he was thirsty.

Speaker 1:

Now, understand this. This is very important because I am coming to something. I want us to get that. Once we get that, I will show you some things, both physiologically. I'm telling you by the time we finish, when we are done with this, you will not be afraid of fasting. You may feel dry, but this is important. This is so crucial.

Speaker 1:

Fasting is a very powerful physiological desire. Okay, it says Jesus was hungry. Do you know? Your desire for water is stronger than your desire for food. I'll come back in a moment. Your desire to drink water is stronger than your desire to drink Now.

Speaker 1:

How do we know? Jesus was not thirsty when the devil? Listen, when the devil came to tempt Jesus, what did he say? If you are the son of God, change or transform these stores to become bread so that you may eat. Why? Because he was hungry. But if Jesus was thirsty, the devil could have told him talk to this rock, like it happened in the Old Testament, and let water come out of the rock. Are you seeing that? I want you to understand, beloved, because all of us are afraid. We are afraid of fasting, and I'll come to the benefits of fasting in a moment. Okay, I'll come to that. You will be surprised by what we will see. So Jesus was not thirsty, otherwise the devil would have told him make water come out of the rock so that you can drink something for yourself. He didn't say that. He told him change these stones to become bread.

Speaker 1:

So, number one, jesus himself fasted, and he fasted from food. He expects us to fast. Look at what we have just read. He taught where we have just read, in Matthew, chapter 6. Matthew, chapter 6, verse 16 and 17. We have to go there. Let's go there, okay. Matthew, chapter 6. That's where we were Right. We just read that and verse 16, 17, and 18. Look at this.

Speaker 1:

Jesus said, moreover, when you fast, when you fast. He said when you fast. He didn't say if you fast. You have to underline that and take that. Jesus said when you. So he was expecting the disciples, the followers of his Jesus. He says when you fast, not if you fast, because if he had said if you fast, he would have meant it is optional. But he says when you fast. So he is expecting that you and I will practice fasting, and it is repeated twice there. But verse 17 also says but when you fast. So he says how not to do it, first of all, and then he says how to do it. He tells them how not to do it and then he tells them how to do it. He tells them how not to do it and then he tells them how to do it. He is expecting that when we fast, this is what we are supposed to do. We are only not to be like hypocrites, like the way the Pharisees were doing, as a show of our motives must be clear, but only that.

Speaker 1:

Go to Matthew, chapter 9. A little ahead there, chapter 9. You will see Jesus responding to the disciples, to the disciples of John the Baptist. John the Baptist disciples that come in verse 14. Matthew, chapter 9, verse 14 and 15.

Speaker 1:

Then the disciples of John came to him saying why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast? And Jesus said to them can the bridegroom, can the friends of the bridegroom mourn? As long as the bridegroom is with them, the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them and then they will fast. You see that Jesus is saying I am here, I am the bridegroom, I am the friend of the bride. They ask you why Other people are fasting, but your disciples are not fasting. Jesus answers and says I am the bridegroom, the friend of the bridegroom is there. How can they fast? Then he answers and tells the disciples of John the days are coming when the bridegroom will be taken away. Then they will fast. Hear that? No, so, church, as long as the bridegroom is still away, as long as Jesus Christ is still on the throne and is coming back, he expects the church. He expects the church to be fasting. That's what we are supposed to be doing as believers.

Speaker 1:

Now, when we talk about fasting, there are a lot of benefits. I will come to the spiritual benefits, but I want to whet your appetite about fasting from the physical point of view, because when you see the benefits that we will get, I'll talk about spiritual benefits later, but I want to talk about physical benefits, health benefits. Remember, when I am talking about fasting, I am talking about you staying away from food, but not water. God, who expects us to fast? Has designed our bodies, beloved, listen to fast. Has designed our bodies, beloved. Listen to this, hear this. God has designed our bodies to be able to survive without food for a long, long time. This will blow. Maybe you have never fasted. Maybe you have never denied yourself some food.

Speaker 1:

Let me read you something. These ones I'm reading from the internet. It's not in my notes. I will read them from the internet so that you guys can hear. You guys can hear, you guys can hear. You guys can hear. It says it takes about 24 hours. This is Healthline. I'm reading from Healthline, healthline. You can Google Healthline about fasting. It is all there.

Speaker 1:

Let me read one statement. They say with no food and no water, the maximum time the body can survive is thought to be about one week Listen to that Without food and without water. If you deny yourself food and water, the maximum time that your body can survive is for one week, without water only but no food. Survival time may extend to up to two or three you thought I would say days Without food, but when you are taking with water, your body can survive for two to three months. This is something is there in the medical journal, it is something that I saw. You can live and live for 60 to 90 days without food but on water. Think about that.

Speaker 1:

But our bodies, when you start fasting, let me tell you, when you start fasting the first day, I'm telling you, your stomach, your hunger pangs, they come in so strong it is as though you will drop. Sometimes you start even trembling. It's like you're going to fall down in the next minute. Start even trembling, it's like you're going to fall down in the next minute. This body loves the things of this world and we are denying ourselves benefits which we can get in the spirit by listening to our senses, by listening to the body, your body beloved. My body can live without solid food. You can live for two good months without eating food just on water alone. Think about that. Think about that Within the first 24 hours, the body will have eaten all your liver.

Speaker 1:

First of all, let me talk I'm talking like a medical person. Now your liver stores what is called glycogen and when you don't eat food and you have water, your liver uses the glycogen to produce energy for you to continue. Within the first 24 hours, then your glycogen stores in the liver become depleted and then in the next 24 hours, it will touch your muscles a little bit. Okay, I'm giving education here. I am giving education For the next 24 hours. You will get your muscles To preserve your muscles and start destroying or using your fat stores to provide energy for you. Hear that. I want you to get out of the fear that you will drop dead. You won't. You won't drop dead. Listen, let's talk about the benefit. Let's talk about benefit and these are things that I just read. I just read from the internet and I thought these ones will be good to just whet our appetite. It is still on Healthline, so you can go and Google that, but I will just read them for you.

Speaker 1:

About fasting, the benefits of fasting Beloved. It is there. It is there. It is there Not spiritual? I'm talking about physical benefits. Listen. Number one fasting promotes blood sugar control by reducing insulin resistance. Did you know that that's medical? Fasting promotes blood sugar control by reducing insulin resistance. That's number one benefit. You start fasting and they say here several studies have found that fasting may improve blood sugar control, which may be helpful for those at risk of developing diabetes. That's benefit number one. Okay, you can go read the rest. Let me go to benefit number two. Listen to this, listen to this.

Speaker 1:

Fasting promotes better health by fighting inflammation. Wow, fasting promotes. You are saying Pastor, you are talking science here and we are in church. Yes, I am trying to knock out the fear of fasting. Because your body will lie, your body lies, your stomach lies. It tells you you are going to die, don't fast. Tells you you are going to die, don't fast. And because our bodies are tuned to listen to our senses, we are robbing ourselves of benefits. We don't fast to get these benefits, but these are fringe benefits, beloved. They come along and when I come to show you oh, my goodness, I hope you stay with me when I come to show you what fasting will do in the spirit, my goodness, if you don't fast, then you don't know what you are doing, but there is somewhere we are going. Okay, let me go Number two.

Speaker 1:

So fasting promotes better health by fighting inflammation, fighting inflammation, fighting inflammation. Oh Lord, I can't read all these studies, but I am a witness beloved. This one I can give up. I have read testimonies and testimonies, and testimonies, but let me give you my own personal experience. The other time here, I fasted for 21 days with nothing but water alone, and I was strong. I was cooking for my wife, hunger had got. Listen, this is what happens when you start fasting. I will teach you what happens. I will repeat this again. When you start fasting, the first two days are crazy, but afterward, on the third day, hunger is kicked off because your body has gone into another mode. It's called ketosis. Ketosis To generate energy for itself.

Speaker 1:

Okay, so when I started fasting, fasting, I used to have some very bad pain on my shoulder. I never, I never talk about I don't like talking what I am feeling all the time. My wife didn't know this, but my blood, my, my, my shoulder, my, my, my right shoulder was so bad, I was hurting so bad. When I see people coming to the clinic, oh, I had shoulder replacement. The devil was always whispering to me you will need shoulder replacement. You are growing old, you are getting joint diseases Beloved.

Speaker 1:

I don't give testimonies to make God look good. I say what is all true and I'm a witness before God. When I got into a fast, by the time I finished my fast, I think by the end of the second week, all the pains on my joints this is something I'm just reading now. I didn't know, but all the pains on my joints, on my shoulder and every part, they were all gone. Everything was gone. In fact, for a long time I said my God is water medicine? Because I was taking water three, four times a day. I said maybe somebody needs to research. Water is one of the greatest medicine that a man can take to maintain his health.

Speaker 1:

Do you know the foods that we eat? Some of them cause a lot of destruction on our bodies. Did you know that I am talking science? I am talking from and this is what I just read the other day. So, number two Fasting promotes better health by fighting inflammation. You can go and read more. It is there on Healthline. Number three it's not in my notes but I am reading. I felt led this morning to read for you this Number three Fasting may enhance heart health by improving blood pressure, triglycerides and cholesterol levels.

Speaker 1:

Can I read that again? Fasting may enhance heart health by improving blood pressure, triglycerides and cholesterol. Heart health is considered to be the leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for an estimated 19 million deaths globally by the year 2020. But when you fast, you improve your blood pressure, you improve your triglycerides, you improve your cholesterol. That is number three.

Speaker 1:

Let me go to number four. My time is running. Number four. Number four Fasting may boost brain function and prevent neurodegenerative disorders. Prevent you from growing too old, prevent you from getting senility too early. Patting may boost brain function and prevent neurodegenerative disorders. This is something I have been searching, so you can go read Number five. Number five Fasting aids weight loss by limiting calorie intake and boosting metabolism. Hallelujah, it aids weight loss by limiting calorie intake and boosting metabolism. I don't need to expound that. You all know. If you want to lose weight, just get into a fast, all right. Number six Ah, this is a nice one, number six. This is a nice one. Number six Fasting increases growth hormone secretion, which is vital for growth, metabolism, weight loss and muscle strength.

Speaker 1:

Wow, I'm going to read it again. Wow, I'm going to read it again. Fasting increases growth hormone secretion, which is vital for growth, metabolism, weight loss and muscle strength. You would think when I fast, I will lose my muscles. You would think when I fast, I will lose my muscles, but when you fast, there is secretion of growth hormone. There is secretion of growth hormone, which is vital for your metabolism and weight loss and muscle strength.

Speaker 1:

Now listen to number seven. This may blow your mind. I know everyone would love this. Number seven fasting could extend longevity. Fasting could extend longevity. Fasting could extend longevity. Animal studies have found that fasting could delay aging and increase longevity, but human research is still lacking. They have studied on animals and the animals that were given some intermittent fasting. They lived longer than those that were given food continuously. What it's science? This is science. This is science. Okay, let me read one more. One more. Number eight One more. There are many more, but I'll read one more. Listen One more and then we continue. One more. There are many more, but I'll read one more. Listen One more and then we continue. One more. Fasting may aid in cancer prevention and increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy Therapy.

Speaker 2:

Somebody's folding their mouth? Yeah.

Speaker 1:

Fasting may aid in cancer prevention and increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy. This is something that has been studied, reviewed and published. Look at what it says. A review published in the American Cancer Society Journal notes that intermittent fasting may benefit the treatment and prevention of cancer. In some situations, it may decrease tumor growth and toxicity from chemotherapy. In some situation, it may decrease the tumor growth and toxicity from chemotherapy in some people. That is science. It's not in the Bible, but it is science why.

Speaker 1:

Why am I reading this? Why am I reading this, beloved? I am reading this so that you can know, first of all, we are scared when you start. Why am I reading this, beloved? I am reading this so that you can know, first of all, we are scared when you start talking about fasting, people say oh, pastor, I came to church on the wrong day. I didn't come here to be told to stay up.

Speaker 1:

My friend, we love our food, we love the stomach. That's why the Bible says the god of some people is their stomach. We love to eat, we love our food, but food is killing us. Good, thank you, my. My wife is saying food for the stomach and a stomach for food, and both will be destroyed in hell. She's already quoting scripture. So when you are hungry, when you are hungry, when you have not eaten, your body is telling you oh, you better get you know, like I don't know about you. When I start fasting, my friend, I don't know what happens to my nose. My nose can pick up food from one mile away. I can sense every hotel around me. I can sense all of it. I just want to eat. You see some sugar, you want to eat it. Your body is crying for sugar, wanting sugar, wanting sugar, but that's the same thing that is killing you. This body wants to go back to the ground where it came from. But when you choose to fast, when you decide no, those hunger plans are lying. Beloved. If you get anything from this message because I am coming to spiritual benefits, these are the ones. I wanted to put these ones, the health benefits, ahead before the spiritual benefits, so that you know, besides what we will gain from the spirit, that there is a personal. There is a personal benefit. There is a personal benefit. You will benefit, beside our breakthrough, that we are going to get in the spirit when we get into fasting.

Speaker 1:

If you miss anything, just know this your body can live for up to two months or three months without food as long as you are taking water. Water is the key thing as long as you have water and nobody is asking you to go for two months fasting. We are not going to do that here. I am just telling you that every symptom that you get is a lie. You will not drop dead as long as you are taking water. On the contrary, there are some diseases that you have which are going to be knocked off by just deciding I'm going to take water. I will use water as a medicine. This is something that I proved personally. There are some degenerative diseases that the body will just need water to flush them out, to flush your system, to flash your system.

Speaker 1:

I was reading some articles which were telling me that your stomach lining some people who have never fasted for long their stomach lining is like a gutter. There are some food that have been in the stomach for about two months. They are still there. It's like a rotten system. It's like a system that is I don't know how you can picture it, but I don't want to be gross here but when you start taking water and flushing out, you are taking away some toxins. You're flushing away some toxins in your body and, all of a sudden, your body begins to feel well. Your body begins to feel well Beloved. We will talk about spiritual benefits, benefits of fasting, in our next teaching. Get this, this is just laying the ground. Get this, this is just laying the ground. God and Jesus expects you and I to fast. Why their spiritual benefits and their physical benefits.

Speaker 2:
