Understanding And Practicing Fasting- Spiritual Benefits (Part 3)

Dr. Gilbert Mwachia

Can fasting truly amplify your prayers and deepen your spiritual connection? Today, we promise you’ll uncover the transformative power fasting holds in elevating your spiritual practice. We begin with a recap of the fundamental aspects we’ve previously discussed, such as the importance of fasting in spiritual disciplines and its role in humbling the soul. Now, discover the fifth benefit: how fasting intensifies and amplifies your prayers, aligning them more closely with God’s will and unlocking all the spiritual resources He provides.

Moving beyond asking, to seeking and knocking, is crucial in your journey of faith. Based on scriptures like Jeremiah 29:11-13 and Hebrews 11:6, we emphasize the need for persistent faith and an earnest desire to seek God with all your heart. Fasting emerges as a powerful testament to this commitment, pushing you to a deeper, more sincere approach to prayer. By demonstrating your earnest desire for God's intervention, fasting becomes an essential tool in your spiritual arsenal.

Lastly, we tackle the challenge of overcoming unbelief through prayer and fasting. Reflecting on the disciples’ struggle in Matthew 17:19-20, we explore how unbelief can hinder the manifestation of God’s power in our lives. Learn how fasting and prayer can help you align more closely with God’s principles and experience His miraculous interventions. We wrap up with a call to action, urging you to stand firm in faith and readiness, fully prepared to receive God’s blessings. Join us in this insightful session and elevate your spiritual journey.

Speaker 1:

Amen. So welcome to our time for the Word of God. We want to continue on the subject which we have been learning, which is understanding and practicing fasting. Understanding and practicing fasting. Now we have covered a lot of sessions and all these messages are valuable. It is important for you not to take one message and run with it. I've called it understanding. It's good to do things with understanding because if you do things based on only one message, that you may go the wrong way and find yourself injuring yourself in the process. So make sure you have a proper understanding of what you are doing that you may do it in a biblical way.

Speaker 1:

Now, last time we were on this subject spiritual benefits of fasting, spiritual benefits of fasting and I'll quickly just name those that we have covered so that we can go on to today's session and be able to learn together. We saw the first benefit is that fasting is as important as prayer and reading the word of God in our spiritual discipline. Fasting is as important as prayer and reading the word of God in our spiritual discipline or spiritual development. Again, those messages are available. I don't want to go into the depth of that. Number two we saw that fasting humbles the soul before God. Fasting is a way of humbling yourself before God. And we looked at scriptures and tried to see why is God so attracted to humility? Why is so God attracted to humility? We covered that and then we went to the third spiritual benefits was that fasting draws the attention of God. Fasting draws the attention of God. We don't know why, but every time you look in the Bible you will see when men fasted and did it the right way, god was attracted towards them to do something supernatural, all right. And when they did it the wrong way, god moved. Like in Isaiah 58, god was correcting the children. He was correcting the children of Israel because of wrong way of fasting. So we covered that.

Speaker 1:

That fasting demonstrates dependency on God. When you get into prayer and fasting, you are demonstrating your dependence on God. And we looked at Jehoshaphat when he was invaded by armies in 2 Chronicles 20. And we saw there Jehoshaphat telling God we don't know what to do, but our eyes are on you. Literally he was telling God that we have no strategy to go against the army that is attacking us. Neither do we have the capabilities of doing that and because of that we are depending on you. If you don't help us, then we are done. So that is demonstration of the dependency on God. Now I want us to go into some of the things that I want to share today. So number five for those who are following. So we are on number five, benefit number five, and let's flow together. And let's flow together.

Speaker 1:

Fasting intensifies and amplifies prayer. All right, fasting intensifies and amplifies your prayers in the presence of God. Now, you know, prayer has different levels. I want us to get to understand. We are called to pray, we are called to seek God, we are called to ask. But there are levels of prayer, all right, and you can move from one level to another. And when you begin to step into those levels of prayer, then your prayers become more powerful. Sometimes we think that God will hear us better when we are shouting, when we are making noise or when we pray louder. That's when God hears. No, god is not deaf, right, it is not the shouting that matters, but there are a number of things that God looks at in the prayer and one of the things that fasting does. Fasting amplifies your prayer. It's like I'm speaking through this microphone, but there is an amplifier somewhere which is making that voice louder. It's making that voice more hearable, if you like to use that word. So prayer has different levels. All right, so you may have a need, which you are seeking God, and you begin to pray, and you begin to pray. You begin to pray, but then you reach a moment you feel you want to engage another level in the presence of God. Then you enter in with fasting. Now let me.

Speaker 1:

I was told, if you don't read the Bible, nobody sees. You are reading. We know the very familiar verse in Matthew, chapter 7. All right, matthew, chapter 7. Let's go there. Matthew 7, verse number 7. All right, matthew 7,. Jesus says Ask and it will be given to you. Speak and you will find. Knock and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds. And to him who knocks it will be opened. And then he goes on to name. There you know, if you ask for bread, will God give you a stone. So Jesus is teaching about prayer there and he shows that there are different categories, I believe, when he's talking about asking, that is level one.

Speaker 1:

And then, when you go to the next level, you seek. All right, you seek, you have entered another level. When you go to the level of knocking. That is even a higher level in your prayer. You are climbing up, you are taking, you are engaging another gear in your seeking God for an answer. We are so used to praying, and praying, and praying, but then we don't employ all the spiritual arsenal, all the spiritual weapons which God has made available for us. But, beloved, sometimes God would watch us. God will look at us, listen to me. When we have a need, have a need, god will look at us. God will look at you and me to see your determination. Somebody who is asking, he just has a need, all right. But when you go to seeking, you have lost something. You seek because you have lost. Now you want to find something that is missing. Maybe you have lost your health, you have lost your job, you have lost your family, whatever else you have lost, you have lost your career. Now you know you are under attack, you go to seek and then you can take it to another level and go to knock.

Speaker 1:

I know this is a little difficult to understand. Let me use a very good example, because we have to understand how the spiritual realm works, how God works in the spirit. Let's take the example of the Syrophoenician woman. All right, the Syrophoenician woman in Matthew, chapter 15. We are in Matthew here. If you scroll forward, you go to chapter 15, from verse 21. Many of you who know the Bible, but for those who don't know, you can go and read it in your own time. We don't have time to go there.

Speaker 1:

Jesus had gone to the region it's called the region of Tyre and Sidon. He had left the borders of Israel and entered into Tyre and Sidon. He had left the borders of Israel and entered into Tyre and Sidon and we are told there was a woman there, a Greek woman, who had that Jesus was in town. And when she had, jesus was in town, she had a daughter who was demon possessed and she grabbed the opportunity and she said this is my moment, this is my opportunity. I am not going to let this pass. Because Jesus has come into my town. And we are told, if you go and read there, we are told she went to Jesus and she began to cry out oh Jesus, son of David. That means she was recognizing this is the promised one, this was a promised Messiah, this was the one God had spoken about. So she had faith in Jesus, in Jesus. Jesus, son of David, have mercy over me. Have mercy over me and heal, for my daughter is demon possessed and severely vexed.

Speaker 1:

Now, what I wanted to say I don't want to spend time breaking that, it's a very important scripture but what I wanted to say is the levels which Jesus is watching this woman, because sometimes God deals with us in that level. There are different levels. Now he is asking oh, jesus, son of David, have mercy over me. My daughter is severely demon possessed. The Bible says Jesus answered not a word.

Speaker 1:

That's a very difficult position to find yourself beloved, wherein you are asking you have a need. You have identified Jesus. He is able to help you with a need that you have. And you begin to pray and you begin to call Jesus, help me. You are calling on heaven. I need help, lord, help me, and heaven is silent, or Jesus says nothing. What will you do? You know, if I come to you and I'm talking to you and I start asking you something and you don't say anything, that's like an insult, right?

Speaker 1:

But this woman, we are told, and you don't say anything, that's like a new sword, right? But this woman, we are told, she did not stop there Even though Jesus didn't say anything. We are told the disciples went to the master. If you read down there, it says they went to the master and said Lord, send this woman away, for she keeps crying after us. That is the key right there, this woman, although Jesus kept quiet, although Jesus didn't say anything concerning her situation, she kept calling, she kept crying. Oh Lord, son of David, have mercy over me, my daughter, my daughter, my daughter, oh, my daughter is demon possessed. My daughter is severely Please, help me, please. And Jesus is saying nothing until the disciples will say lord, this is, this is not right. If you're not going to help her, just send her away, just just just put her off. Don't just keep quiet, just tell her to go away. So they went to the master, sent her away because she is making noise to us, she is an interruption, oh hallelujah, I love that part of it.

Speaker 1:

And Jesus sends a message through the disciples, and the disciples he tells them go tell that woman, I was not sent but for the lost sheep of Israel, but for the lost sheep of Israel. So then he said I'm sure Peter, peter was the only one who was so vocal. I'm sure Peter went. Oh hey, woman, woman, listen, we have told him to send you away. He has not sent you away, but he has said he was not. He is not interested. You are not a Jew, he was sent for the Jew. You are a interested. You are not a Jew, he was sent for the Jew. You are a Greek, you are a Gentile. This is not your portion. Mama, can you go away and leave us alone? We are on our mission. In fact, jesus was trying to rest. If you go and read in Mark, chapter 7, you will see the same account. He was trying to get some rest and this woman was following behind. Okay, I don't want to be lost here.

Speaker 1:

So when they tell the woman that Jesus has no time for you, read what happens next. There we are told the woman went down. I think she pushed Peter away, went down. I think she pushed Peter away and said I did not come to you, I came for Jesus. Leave me alone. I am not leaving here until I talk to him face to face. And she went there and knelt down and worshipped him and said Lord, please help me. Wow, what a woman. Those are levels of prayer and Jesus, even when she is there on her knees worshiping the Lord, worshiping the Lord. Jesus tells her it is not good, mama, to take the bread of the children and toss it to the little dogs. That is an insult right there. If you are told that, what will you do? You know you're just a little dog, you don't deserve it, you don't merit this. You're asking something that you don't merit. And the woman says I'm cutting this story. She says, lord, even the little dogs eat of the crumbs that fall from their master's table. And therein Jesus said this woman has reached the point of knocking the door.

Speaker 1:

I'm trying to explain asking and seeking and knocking. You have to know sometimes God watches. How much do we need what we are looking for? How much do we really believe? Do we really want it? Do we really desire? You know, we give up so fast. We give up so fast. We don't press through, we don't move. We don't move from the level of asking oh, I ask God, I already prayed about that. Oh, nothing is happening. And so I think it is the will of God. I think God wanted like that, so I'm going to live with it. No, sometimes God will keep quiet, sometimes heaven will keep quiet and watch over you. Do you really want it. Are you able to move? That's why Jesus didn't just say ask and you will receive. No, he said ask and you will receive. Seek and you will find Knock, knock on the door and the doors will be opened. But we don't press in, we don't fight in, we don't move in. We don't press him, we don't fight him, we don't move him. We give up so easily and the enemy is having a filled day in our lives.

Speaker 1:

Beloved prayer has levels. So when you choose to seek the Lord, if you go to Jeremiah, let me read Jeremiah, chapter 29. We know Jeremiah 29. Jeremiah 29, verse 11. We love verse 11, but I want to read verse 12 and 13. Jeremiah, chapter 29. We know verse 11. All of us can sing that maybe. Where we say For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope, and we love that verse, we write it on our plates, on our books, on everywhere. But we omit verse 12, where he says Then you shall call upon me and go and pray and I will listen. That's one level you shall call upon me and go and pray to me and I will listen to you. Look at verse 13. I will listen to you. Look at verse 13. And you will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart, beloved.

Speaker 1:

That's a condition in the spirit. That's a condition in the spirit God desires, god wants us to seek him. When we set ourselves, when we set our hearts, to seeking God, we come before him believing God has an answer. God is able to solve this problem and, lord, we are not leaving you. We are not leaving you. We will do whatever we need to do in order to make sure we have an answer from you. And god says you will seek me, right when jesus say ask and he shall receive, seek. And you will find that seeking is a seeking that has to go with all your heart. It is when you have decided, when you have made up your mind my god, I'm gonna seek god, I'm gonna search for god. You have decided, when you have made up your mind my God, I'm going to seek God. I'm going to seek for God. You have my answer. You were able to do this. And God says you will seek me and you will find me when you seek me with all your heart. You are hot and I tell you, I submit to you sometimes that seeking God with all our heart comes to the point to say I will spare my time for the supper table so that I can go to the upper table and commune with God. I will leave my bread, I will leave my breakfast and commit myself and say Lord, I am seeking God Beloved.

Speaker 1:

There is something about fasting. I tell you the truth. There is something about fasting Because we love our food. I don't know about you. I love food, I love eating. Look at this. I don't have to tell I love food, I love eating. Look at this. I don't have to tell you anything. There is an evidence right here. I love eating. That's me. But there is a time I have to tell God oh, this food is not more important than everything. I want you, god, more than I want this food. I am seeking you with all my heart, and that moves the heart of God, that moves the hand of the Lord. Hallelujah, oh, praise the name of the Lord. If you don't believe about seeking God with all our heart, it's what brings the answer.

Speaker 1:

Let me read with you a very familiar verse in Hebrews, chapter 11, verse 6. We all know this. I think we're seeing this, but I know these messages are going to places. Some people have never read the Bible, so that's why we read them, so that they may know what we are saying is from the Bible. Hebrews 11 and verse 6, all right, hebrews 11, verse 6, what does it say? But without faith, it is impossible to please him. For he who comes to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him. See, it is all there. You go from Genesis all the way to Revelation, you will see the same principle over and over and over God coming again. You have to seek me. God is the rewarder, he says, those who seek him. God is a rewarder of those who seek him diligently. Seek him. That means they are, they are, they are, they make up their mind, they have decided. I am taking this need before God, I am taking this issue before God and I am setting myself to find an answer from God. Oh, I didn't read for you the verses that we started with. I read for you verse 7 and 8 in Matthew.

Speaker 1:

In Matthew, chapter 7. Chapter 7, verse 7, I read for you ask and it shall be given to you. Knock and they shall seek and you'll find. Knock and the door will find. And then it says whoever asks, receives. Whoever knocks, seeks, he finds. And whoever knocks, the door will be opened.

Speaker 1:

But down there, jesus now begins to explain. He begins to explain, he tells them if somebody has done those levels. He has done those levels. He says who of you oh, this is coming so sweet in my heart who of you, which of you, fathers, you have a child who will ask for a bread and will give him a stone, or will ask for? Oh well, let's go there. Some of you are looking at me like what are you talking about? Did I lose you? All right, let's go back to Matthew, chapter 7.

Speaker 1:

We just read verse 7 and 8. Let me bring verse 9,. All right, let me bring verse 9. Okay, Let me bring verse 9. All right, let me bring verse 9. Okay, or, what man is there among you? If his son asks for a bread, we'll give him a stone. Or if he asks for a fish, we'll give him a serpent. If you, then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father, who is in heaven, give? Good things. Give good things. Give good things to those who ask him. Therefore, whatever man want you to, I'll leave verse 12 alone, but I'm already got in my message. Do you see what I say? He says that if you ask him, if you seek him, and then if you knock, oh my goodness, in nothing you can receive. There is no door that can remain open. If God sees you asking him and seeking and knocking, jesus offers a guarantee. He says you will receive. Let me share one more spiritual blessing.

Speaker 1:

We have mentioned about fasting intensifies and amplifies prayer. I'll share one more and then next week we'll go to a different lesson on fasting, types of fasting. We'll look at types of fasting. So, number six fasting energizes the spirit to have faith in God for the supernatural. Write that one down Fasting energizes the spirit to have faith in God for the supernatural. Say it again for those who are writing Fasting energizes the spirit to have faith in God for the supernatural. And I'm not talking about this Holy Spirit, I'm talking about your spirit. All right, let's go to where we were, where we brought in prayer and fasting during our time dealing with stubborn demons. Let's go to Matthew, chapter 17. All right, let's go to there. Matthew, chapter 17,. All right, let's go to there. Matthew, chapter 17, verse 19.

Speaker 1:

The disciples, the disciples of Jesus, had failed in a deliverance session and they went and asked the master why could we not cast out that demon? We have learned a lot about that, but we will read it again Matthew 17, verse 19, 20. It says then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said why could we not cast it out? So Jesus said to them, and nothing will be impossible for you. However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting. See that Now Jesus. The disciples had faith. They prayed for a child who had a demon, and the demon did not come out. Now we know when Jesus came, he cast the devil out. We covered all that in our previous teachings. And then they came behind privately and said Lord, why could we not cast out that demon? Now they are finding out the reason why they were not able to cast out the demon. Now they are finding out the reason why they were not able to cast out the demon. So the subject is why could they not cast out the demon? I want you to understand this and we'll go home in a minute.

Speaker 1:

Jesus said it is because of your unbelief. The reason why you are not able to remove that demon is because of your unbelief. And then he assures them. He says if you have faith, just more faith, like a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, go and it will go. It will go wherever you want. And he has a very important statement. He says nothing shall be impossible for you, beloved.

Speaker 1:

The present day church it's like we are straying away from that. We don't believe that there is nothing that God cannot do, and there are churches which actually preach that. They preach against the supernatural. They kill people. They forbid people from going for the, would you believe, from going for the supernatural. God already himself is supernatural and they don't want people to stretch out and begin to trust God for the impossible.

Speaker 1:

And Jesus himself says if nothing shall be impossible, then Jesus does say, however, this kind does not go out but by prayer and fasting. This kind does not go out but by prayer and fasting. What was he addressing? Now, there are two interpretations. Some people interpret that it meant that this demon, the demon which was in this child, on that boy, would not go out because and we have taught that that they were lacking in prayer and fasting the disciples while Jesus was away. Their discipline for fasting was lacking. Now, that's one way. The other way is to understand Jesus is addressing unbelief. Jesus is addressing their unbelief because that is the problem they had. The problem they had was they were in unbelief. That is why they could not be able to cast out that demon. And then Jesus tells them how to deal with the unbelief they had.

Speaker 1:

Now, there are different kinds of unbelief, but this particular one, this particular one for the supernatural remember you guys are drawing me so far away. We have covered some things, some lessons, but remember this. Remember this it is possible to believe and you are still in unbelief. Okay, I shared this, I told this, but that's what you should be understanding in the back of your mind. Remember the father of the child when he told Jesus Lord, if you can do anything, help us. And Jesus said what Are you talking about? If I can do it, it's not about me doing it, it is about you believing. He told him if you can believe, everything is possible to him that believes. That is in Mark, chapter 9, verse 23. And the father cried out a wonderful prayer. He says Lord, I believe, help me in my unbelief. So the father identified yes, I believe Jesus can, but there is something. I am struggling here. There is a tension. There is a tension with me, I believe, but I'm still in unbelief. Now that's what Jesus is addressing here. Okay, he is addressing that to the disciple. He addressed it on the father of the child. He made a prayer and Jesus helped him.

Speaker 1:

Now the disciples come back behind the scenes. They didn't want to be embarrassed, they wanted to know why did we fail? And Jesus said you guys have a kind of unbelief that prevents the supernatural workings of God, of God. Remember, it's the same unbelief that was in his own hometown, in Nazareth, when he went to Nazareth. The Bible says in Matthew chapter 6, jesus could not do any mighty works there and he marveled at their unbelief. It's the same unbelief. So there is a kind of unbelief. Am I communicating? There is a kind of unbelief that prevents the supernatural power of God from working in our lives. That is what Jesus is explaining here.

Speaker 1:

And then he tells the disciples however, this kind, what kind? Not just a kind of a demon. No, he's not talking about the kind of a demon. He's talking about the kind of unbelief. How do we know he's not talking about the kind of a demon that, oh, you know, you know, you know my disciples, this demon is so big, this demon is so powerful, this demon, this one, you have to fast, you have to fast and fast until you become thin. That's when you will be. How do we know he was not referring to a demon? It's because, if you go to Matthew, chapter 9, we already covered this, but I'm mentioning Matthew, chapter 9, from verse 1.

Speaker 1:

The Bible says he chose the twelve and what did he do? He gave them power and authority over all demons and all sicknesses to cure them. So all demons, all demons are already subject to the disciples, to the church. So he is not talking about demons because he has already delegated that authority. If you read Luke, chapter 10, verse 19,. What does it say? If you read Luke, chapter 10, verse 19, what does it say? He says I give you power to tread upon snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy. So we already have that church, we already have that.

Speaker 1:

But the problem we have Please understand this the problem we have, the problem you and I have yes, we believe we have been given authority, yes, we believe we have power, but we still struggle with unbelief. And Jesus is saying here, this kind, this kind of unbelief, you know, is saying here, this kind, this kind of unbelief, you know there is another. I will come and teach you. There are four different kinds of unbelief which I have learned in my study. I will teach you. I don't have time.

Speaker 1:

But there is this unbelief, this unbelief that prevents the miraculous power of God from taking place, this kind of unbelief that prevented even Jesus himself from doing any miracle. He says this kind the only thing that can break it, the only thing that can overcome it, the only thing that can take it out, is a prayer and a fasting. I just hope you understand that. I just hope you understand that, beloved, okay, that means when you begin to fast, when you begin to first, there is something that happens in your spirit. Your spirit, your faith, your spirit, your ability to believe God, your ability to receive from God, your ability to relieve the power of God, is increased in the spiritual realm. That's why I am setting ourselves that we have time.

Speaker 1:

Oh, church, the problem is not with God, the problem is not with the promises of God. They have not failed. God's word has not failed. God is still the same. The Bible we read tells us Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. The problem we have is us, and where people engage in the spirit, when they prepare their hearts to see the supernatural, god moves. If you go to Africa, god is moving. Other parts of the world, god is moving. There is a problem here in America. America will love our hamburgers, america will have our cheese, america will have our. Give me the names. You know all the names Takozan. So, instead of talking about fasting, people don't want that. So the church is weak, the environment is filled with unbelief, and so the power of God cannot move.

Speaker 1:

Beloved, we must prepare our hearts to see God. We are not going to hurry. We are not going to hurry. We will set ourselves ready and I will teach. I will show you the right attitude. When we fast, we are not trying to beg God. We are not trying to make God do something he does not want to do. I will teach you about the right attitudes when we go to prayer and fasting. We will teach you the different kinds of fasting, because not all of us can fast the same way, okay, so I don't want you to be to start feeling oh, I have this condition in my body, oh, I cannot do it. No, no, no, everyone has a way, and I will begin next week. I will teach about the types of fasting, different types of fasting. There is a place that you can fit in. Every one of us can have a moment when we come to the corporate time of prayer and fasting. Wow, I've broken the record today. I've preached for more than 40 minutes Hallelujah, are you getting something? So we will carry on with our teaching.

Speaker 1:

Beloved, it's so important that we prepare ourselves to see God. We cannot do anyway until we align ourselves with the principles and workings of God. When we do that, god is faithful. God is waiting to help us. God loves to answer our. That's what Jesus said. Which father, which a man amongst you, a child, will ask for a bread and they will give him a stone? No, he says, our father is not like that. God is willing to do the impossible, but we have to be ready to ask, to seek and to knock. We'll carry on from there. God bless you, amen. Stand up on your feet.
