Understanding And Practicing Fasting- Spiritual Benefits (Part 2)

Dr. Gilbert Mwachia

Can fasting truly transform your spiritual life and bring divine intervention in times of crisis? Discover the profound impacts of this ancient discipline as we explore its significance alongside prayer and reading the Word. This episode revisits the powerful story of King Jehoshaphat, illustrating how he led Judah in fasting and seeking God's guidance against overwhelming enemies. By drawing on this biblical narrative, we emphasize the importance of humility, dependence on God, and the remarkable outcomes that can arise when we align our struggles with divine strategies.

Speaker 1:

Amen and blessings to you all.

Speaker 1:

Let's go on with our teaching, and we have been looking and studying a subject here spiritual discipline that Jesus instructed and expected his disciples to continue with, and that is the discipline of fasting. We want to understand what fasting is, when to do it, how to do it, so that we can get into the benefits that come through fasting. Now we have had a number of sessions which have gone before, so if you're joining us today, I will encourage you to be able to listen to the others as well, and also to some other teachings that will come, and also to some other teachings that will come. That way, you will have a complete picture of the subject and when you are involved in this discipline, you will do it with understanding. Now, last Sunday, we were looking at the spiritual benefits of fasting, the spiritual benefits of fasting, spiritual benefits of fasting, and I'll just mention what we have covered so that we can marry in with a continuation of those benefits. We looked and said fasting is as important as prayer and reading the Word of God. Jesus does expect it's not a requirement to go to heaven, but it's an expectation. That is something that we will practice, and whenever Jesus was teaching about prayer. He also taught about fasting and he used almost the same words that he mentioned about prayer. So we were in Matthew, chapter 6, verse 16 and 17, and we compared that with Matthew, chapter 6, verse 5 and 6. That was number one and number two. We say that fasting humbles the soul before God. Fasting is a way of humbling ourselves before God and there is something about humility that attracts God's attention. God loves humility and we looked at a number of scriptures which you can go and learn again. Then we finished with a third blessing, spiritual blessing of fasting, and we said fasting draws the attention of God, fasting draws the attention of God.

Speaker 1:

We were in Isaiah, chapter 58, and we saw particular phrases. When you read in Isaiah 58, you hear God saying and there in Isaiah 58, god was correcting his people. He told Isaiah go and cry out amongst my people, cry and tell them they are doing things the wrong way. And so God shows them the wrong way. They have been practicing fasting, but in the process he mentions some things through the prophet Isaiah, like in verse 4, he says is this the fasting that you do, that your voice may be heard on high, that I may hear on high. Is this the way you fast and you expect me to hear on high? So if you read there and you look at the phrases, you will see some key phrases. Fasting brings the attention of God and so many other things which I mentioned. I don't want to go to that. I want us to proceed from there and go to number four, blessing number four of fasting, a spiritual blessing, number four. So if you are writing, you want to join with me straight there.

Speaker 1:

Fasting demonstrates dependence on God. When you fast, it is a demonstration of your dependence on God. That you are counting on God, you are enlisting the help of God. God does not like when we strut our strength, when we strut our education, when we strut our credential thinking that we will succeed in anything because of what we have or what we are doing. But whenever you get into fasting, you are denying the flesh. You are denying the flesh and that's a demonstration of your dependence on God. Now I want to show you that scripturally, on God. Now I want to show you that scripturally.

Speaker 1:

There are many areas we could go, but I want us to go to 2 Chronicles, chapter 20. Let's read verse 1 through 12, and then we will skip a few verses and go to verse 15, to verse number 17. You will see some things here. We will meet a king, king Jehoshaphat, who was faced with a problem. He was in a crisis. Jehoshaphat was a king of Judah and he depended on God. He was one of the kings, if you read in the Bible, who turned the nation back to God. So he learned to depend on God. But just because you depend on God doesn't mean trouble will not come your way, but any time trouble comes your way, it is an opportunity for you and I to throw ourselves to depend on God. So let's read together. I want to read because that will help me not explain so much and just hit the main point really quickly. Let's go to chapter 20, verse 1.

Speaker 1:

It happened after this that the people of Morb, with the people of Ammon and others besides them, the Ammonites, came to battle against Jehoshaphat. Jehoshaphat saying a great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea, from Syria, and they are in his zone tomorrow, which is in Gedi. And Jehoshaphat feared and set ask help from the Lord and from all the cities of Judah. They came to seek the Lord. Look at that. Pay attention now to verse 12. Look at that. Pay attention now to verse 12. Oh our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us, nor do we not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you. Wow, beloved, this is a great example, and you have to understand that.

Speaker 1:

Everything that is written in the Old Testament is meant to teach us, it's meant to show us God is the same, god does not change. God does not change. God does not show partiality. When we say God does not show partiality, it means if you do the same thing that others did, god is obligated to do the same that he did for others, as he will do for you. That means God cannot show partiality. He is an impartial God.

Speaker 1:

So we see Jehoshaphat here, faced by a multitude coming against him With swords and camels and chariots, three nations attacking him, wanting to destroy them and throw them from their inheritance, which God had given them to inherit Now, beloved. Jehoshaphat was facing a physical enemy. Hosea was facing a physical enemy. Today, we may not be facing guns and battles and bullets facing us, but we do have our own enemies, we do have our own struggles, we do have attacks that come upon our lives to challenge us. We have sicknesses and diseases. We have demons attacking us. We have the powers of darkness. Remember what the Bible says in the New Testament. Paul says in Ephesians, chapter 6 and verse 12, we do not fight against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers and rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of darkness in the heavenly places. So we do have battles, we are fighting, but our battles are simply different Now. They are spiritual battles. I hope you are with me as we are looking at this scripture.

Speaker 1:

So Jehoshaphat is faced with an enemy and a multitude, something that he cannot. He is just. He doesn't have an army. And so what does he do? He dares according to the word of God. This is very important. I'm slowing down because I want us to learn to employ scriptures. I want us to be able to behave and follow what the word of God says.

Speaker 1:

The Word of God says why is Jehoshaphat going to the temple with all the nation, calling everyone to come and assemble before God? It's because remember the scripture that I quoted last week in 2 Chronicles 7 and verse 14. Very many believers know it by heart. That was God speaking to King Solomon. When Solomon had built the temple which Jehoshaphat had gone to, when Solomon had dedicated the temple to God and he was praying, he talked to God about the temple. He said, god, I have built this temple for your name. We have put your earth. This is the dwelling place. This place is called by your own name.

Speaker 1:

And then God spoke to Solomon and he said this is what God said to Solomon. He said if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wickedness, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sins and heal their land. You see that. That is 2 Chronicles 7 and verse 14. So that was a promise directly from God. God says if my people who are called by my own name will humble themselves. Now I explained to you in our last teaching what that word means to humble yourself. We already know, in essence, one of the ways of demonstrating humility before God is when you deny yourself and fast Hallelujah, are you with me?

Speaker 1:

So Jehoshaphat is faced with a crisis, with a problem, and he remembers what God has said. He remembers the word of the Lord, oh, our God, promised whenever we have a crisis, whenever we have a problem, whenever we have an attack, whether it is famine or pestilence or enemies or anything, all we need is to go and gather before his sanctuary and humble ourselves and pray and seek his help. And look at what the words of Jehoshaphat. Look at the words of Jehoshaphat. Let me bring you back again to verse 12. He says oh, our God, will you not judge them? My goodness, I love this. I love it.

Speaker 1:

Now Jehoshaphat removes the battle from his hand. I just wish we will get what we are saying. You know, sometimes we think battles belong to us. We think what we are facing, god really wants us to fight. He removes the battle that he is facing and he takes it back to God. He says God, these people, these people are fighting with you. He says, oh, our God, will you not judge them? It is up to you, god. Judge our enemies. Judge I don't know whether you're getting what I am saying. Lord, judge this demonic attack that is coming against me. Lord, judge this sickness that is coming against me. Lord, judge these people who have risen against me in my place of work, in my employment. Judge this thing that is threatening my career. And I can go on and on and on.

Speaker 1:

He turns the battle to God. He says, oh, our God. He turns the barrel to God and says, oh, our God, will you not judge them? Will you not judge them and listen for the other words he says? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us. Nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon you. Wow, my goodness. What will God do when you do that about your battles? Sometimes and it's not bad to fight I believe in fighting with everything that God has put at our disposal, that we use the medical field, we use the medical science, we use prayer and fasting, we use giving, we use praise.

Speaker 1:

Praise is also a weapon in the spirit, but let's employ all. Praise is also a weapon in the spirit, but let's employ all. And and Jehoshaphat is saying we have no power against this multitude that is coming against us. So he's saying, lord, I am helpless, lord, we are helpless. There is no way I can fight this sickness. There is no way. In fact, the doctors say you are going down, you are going to die. I love the testimony that you sent, brother Mark. That was beautiful about that woman who was fighting cancer and believing God. When the doctor said you have only two or three weeks or six months to live, she turned to the Lord and God gave her a strategy. You will see in a moment. So this Jehoshaphat is saying.

Speaker 1:

Jehoshaphat is saying we have no power. We have no power. So, first of all, we have no power. That means I am not able. If you leave me alone, I am gone. And number two he says we do not know what to do about the situation that we are in. What is he saying? He's saying God, I have no strategy. Are you guys going home? Are you going home or you are still here? There are two things that are coming out very clearly there Don't miss the meat. Don't miss the meat. He's saying God, I don't have the strength. And number two I don't have a strategy. Wow, he said God, I don't have the strength, I don't have the ability and also, I don't have a strategy. I don't have a strategy. I'm almost dancing.

Speaker 1:

I can throw this thing off. When I'm standing here, I'm remembering the sermon of my wife. When my wife preached about Esther the other day and when Esther went on to prayer and fasting and fasting for three days, my wife said something here. Maybe some of you miss it. She said oh, in the time of our prayer, in the time of our fasting, god revealed to Esther a strategy of bringing Haman down. It is a strategy Beloved.

Speaker 1:

Sometimes what we are missing is a strategy. There is nothing like a strategy, and this is not just about battles of sickness and diseases and payment and poverty and all that. A strategy is everything. If you get the strategy of God, my goodness, you can relax. You know, that's it. That is a strategy.

Speaker 1:

Are you getting into a business? Look for a strategy from God. Are you looking for a career? Get a strategy from God. Are you looking to see a breakthrough? I don't care which breakthrough you want in life, just get a strategy from God.

Speaker 1:

And so Jehojabat says O, our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us, nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are on you. What do you think God did in heaven when he had that A whole king is not looking at his army, he's not looking at the general. He's not looking. He's saying, oh, my eyes are upon you. He's saying, oh, my eyes are upon you. And I want you to know, because I have to preach the whole truth in the Bible this was a one-day fast. Okay, so fasting is not about how long you do. It's good to fast for long, but don't be boggled up about the length. I will come to teach. I will come to teach how to fast and when to fast. So if you hear this message, make sure you follow on on the next teaching, because if you only have this, then you will have everything wrong. Okay, I will teach when to fast, how long to fast and how to do it in the right way. We are coming there, but for the moment, I want you to see this was just a one-day fast. One day, in the same day, they came to the temple, just within one day of proclaiming a fast, and he's telling God I have no strength and I have no strategy.

Speaker 1:

Now let's jump to verse 15. Let's jump to it While they are still there. While they are still there and praying and fasting and calling on God and crying out to God. Look at verse 15. Okay, let me read verse 14, because then you will know what really happened. Okay, verse 14. Then, oh, I love it Right there in church. Look at verse 15.

Speaker 1:

And he said listen, all you, judah and you, inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, king Jehoshaphat, as says the Lord to you, do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours but God's Tomorrow. Go down against them. They will surely come up by the essence of this and you will find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel. You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, who is with you. O, judah and Jerusalem, do not fear or be dismayed Tomorrow, go against them, for the Lord is with you. That's a good place, right there, to clap into the word of the Lord. My goodness.

Speaker 1:

This man says I have no power. This man says I have no strategy. And God comes through within one day, within one day of humbling themselves before God and calling on God. And God, what I love is God gives a strategy. Have you seen it there? God gives a strategy and he says don't worry, don't fear, don't be afraid, for this battle is not yours, this battle is mine. You are not going to fight. You are not going to fight in this battle, this battle is mine. And he gives them a strategy Tomorrow, go down. And he tells them where they will. God knows everything, my goodness. God knows the battle you're facing. God knows the enemy that is coming. God knows how, what they will do tomorrow, what those demons are trying to do tomorrow. God already knows what that sickness is trying to do to you tomorrow. God already knows. He knows everything. He knows he knows the businesses you want to do.

Speaker 1:

He knows all. And God says tomorrow, go down, these guys will be coming here, this is the route. They will be coming. Just go down, follow them, don't be afraid. Don't fear, just come.

Speaker 1:

And he says and when you come, you don't need to fight, for this battle is not yours. All you need is to position yourself, and that word, position yourself, beloved, is a whole message by itself. Position yourself, that's where we are missing and I will not go into that, because my message is about fasting. But there is a place where God wants you to position yourself In your battles, in your fight. There is a right place. You must be at the right place at the right time so that you can see what God will do to your enemies. I will leave it at that, but now listen, do you know what happened when they went? I wish we had time to read all this so you can read for yourself.

Speaker 1:

But Jehoshaphat, jehoshaphat, in verse 20,. They rose early. So they rose early. I'm just reading.

Speaker 1:

So they rose early in the morning and went out into the wilderness of Tekoa. As they went out, jehoshaphat stood and said hear me, o Judah and you, inhabitants of Jerusalem, believe in the Lord, your God. Do we believe that. Believe in the Lord, your God, and you shall be established. Believe his prophets and you shall prosper. And when he had consulted with the people, look another strategy God is giving here. And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the Lord and who should praise the beauty of his holiness. As they went out before the army and they were saying praise the Lord, for his mercy endures forever. Now, when they began to sing and praise the Lord, the Lord set ambushes against the Ammon and Moabites and Mount Seir who had come against Judah, and they were defeated. Verse 23,. For the people of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them. And when they had made an end to the inhabitants of Mount Seir, to utterly kill and destroy them.

Speaker 2:

And when they had made an end to the inhabitants of Mount Seir. They helped to destroy one another.

Speaker 1:

You know what? We really don't know our God. We really don't know our God. We don't know who we are serving. Make the Lord open our eyes that we may employ spiritual display. We may be doers of the world, not hearers only. So God says you go down. And when they consult, they have a strategy from the Lord and all they do, instead of sending the army, they begin a choir. What A choir.

Speaker 1:

These guys are coming with guns and bullets and machine guns and chariots and horses and arrows and javelin, and then they employ a choir and the Bible says they went out and they started singing before the Lord. And they were singing and the song was very simple For the Lord is good and his mercy endure forever. That's the song we have sung here, right? God is good, god is good and his mercy endure. Is that what we are singing here? Just that. And they were jumping and jumping. God is good and God is mercy is endure forever. Our God is good, god is mercy. It's like stupidity, but you do the natural, god does the supernatural. Hallelujah. You do the simple, god does the difficult. You do what you are able. God does what you are not able. He does the difficult. You do what you are able, god does what you are not able. He does the impossible. So you do the possible and God does the impossibilities.

Speaker 1:

And the Bible says two nations. There were three nations. Look at this strategy. There were three nations, three nations that were coming. Two nations decided oh wait, those guys just started arguing what are you guys? Why are you guys wanting to be the first ones? I'm just paraphrasing what happened. Okay, so Mount Seir, we are told there was Mount Ammon, there was Mount Seir and there were Moabites. Maybe, I'm just saying maybe, mount Seir. Guys were saying we will be the first ones to attack the Judah. So you guys stay behind. We are the ones who will kill these guys, we will finish. And then the Moabites and the Ammonites said why are you guys so proud? You want to take advantage, you want to take the credit? No, we don't need you. We don't need you, we will finish you out. We will finish you out. We will kill you.

Speaker 1:

And the two nations decided to finish anybody who was from Mount Seir. They finished them and killed them. And they were arguing. Because I'm just saying, because it's not written in the Bible, so don't say I'm adding okay, I'm just giving what I am receiving right now. They argued and they finished Mount Seir so that they don't get any credit for finishing the Judah.

Speaker 1:

And when they had done finishing, those two nations decided oh so who is going to go ahead? And they differed again over that and they started killing one another. You Ammonites, we don't need you. You Moabites, we don't need you, we can deal with the Judah ourselves. And they started fighting, killing each other javelin. Now they killed one another, they wounded one another until everyone was dead. Everyone. The Israelites, the Judah people did not have to lift one javelin, one stone to fight the people of Judah, not one. And you read the story down there because we don't have time.

Speaker 1:

When the nation of Judah came, they found dead bodies. They found dead bodies but all that was left was gold and silver and animals and a chariot. They started taking the rings, the bracelets, the watches, the gold rings and everything, the nose rings they had come with. And the Bible says they did that for three days, for three days, collecting the booty.

Speaker 1:

What am I saying? I'm almost drunk, alone here. What am I saying when we begin to praise, when we humble ourselves before God, when we throw ourselves and say, lord, I have no power over what is coming against me. I have no strategy on what to do. God gives the strategy and God gives the victory. Who knows what God will do against those demonic powers, against those forces, when you humble yourself, whatever you are facing? Who knows what strategy God is going to give you? Who knows when you take time and say, Lord, I need a strategy. I don't know what to do with this, but I want a strategy over this. Who knows what God will put in your heart to do and the victory is going to be yours. And the booty and the booty Every time, what we don't know, the battles that God allows to come our way, they are to become a blessing in our lives.

Speaker 1:

You didn't hear. All these things will be given unto you. You'll seek fast the kingdom when you do, when you do the ways of the Lord. My goodness, you are setting yourself to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. I want to leave it there and then we will carry on from there.
