Speaker 1:

Hello and welcome everyone to this time where we share the Word of God and thank you for joining us. We are continuing with our focus on Paul's instruction to the young man, timothy in 1 Timothy, chapter 4, and verse 7 and 8. We've covered quite a bit, but I will read it again. It's just two verses and then we will carry on from there 1 Timothy, chapter 4, verse 7 and 8. But reject profane and old wives' fables and exercise yourself toward godliness, for bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things. Having promise of a life that now is and of that which is to come. We have looked at the promises, a couple of promises. We looked at the present life promises and we have covered one the presence of God. If you pursue a godliness, you can count on the presence of God. The second one we looked at was the peace of God. You count on the peace of God, and so I think last time, last Sunday, we were looking at God's provision, so provision of God, this life, there are promises that go along with godliness. There is the provision. So the presence of God, the peace of God, the provision of God.

Speaker 1:

And today I want to cover maybe two more as we close. There are several others, but I can't do all of that. It's like it's the whole Bible, so I'll only cover those five. So today we'll cover two more, and so let's go to the number four, okay, so, the presence of God, the peace of God, of God, the provision of God. And number four is the power of God. So you notice, I put them in peace there presence, peace, provision and power of God. Now, beloved, we need the power, we need the strength for the journey of this life. Our Christian work is faced with challenges, is faced with the enemy, and we cannot do it alone, we cannot make it alone. We need power, we need strength in order to be able to successfully live out the Christian life. Now, when you pursue godliness, when you pursue godliness, you will notice that God has promised to give us strength. And we look at the Bible over the years, you will see how men of God, people who have set themselves apart to follow after God, to pursue God, to live a godly life, they have been strengthened, they have received the supernatural strength to live an exemplary life, a life that continues to speak even to this generation, even though they lived many generations that have gone by.

Speaker 1:

Now we can go over the Bible at many, many places, but I just want to mention, maybe just cover, two fellows just as examples. We can look at David, for example. The Bible calls David a man after God's own heart and that's the testimony that God gave about David. It's somewhere in Acts, chapter 13, where he says I have seen David to be a man after my own heart. So David was pursuing godliness, he was pursuing righteousness and because he started as a young man he was young but he made up his mind he was going to pursue godliness. And we read God has given us a privilege to see the testimony of David, what he's gone through and how God has had worked with him over his life. Last time we were reading about provision, where he was saying I was young and now I am old. I have never seen the righteous forsaken, nor his children begging bread. That was David. We saw that last time.

Speaker 1:

But today let me read with you Psalms 18. I'll just read Psalms 18, verse one, two and 3. You can read the rest. But this is just the testimony of how David describes God in his life, you know, and very powerful imageries. He uses some images to show us how his walk with God, how his relationship with God, was All right.

Speaker 1:

Psalms 18,. I'm going to read verse one, two and three. Listen to what he says here I will love you, o Lord, my strength. That's how he describes God. I don't know what version you have. This is New King James. He says I will love you, o Lord Yahweh. That is Yahweh, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer. Look at how he described God. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my strength, in whom I will trust my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised. So shall I be saved from my enemies. I want you to see how he describes God. You know David was facing battles, but David had enemies. David had people who were wanting to kill him, saul in particular, but also other kings. They didn't like him.

Speaker 1:

But he says my God, god is the strength of my life. What am I saying, dear friends, is that God was the strength in the life of David and, of course, many other people in the Bible. You can do a study over that. You see how David, a man of after God's own heart, wanting to please God despite his failures. David had his own failures we all have but his heart, his heart was after God. His heart was to live a life that seeks God, that worships God, that believes in God, god that worships God, that believes in God, and God was the strength of his life. He did not look to anything.

Speaker 1:

No-transcript. What is your strength? Is your strength your money? Is it your education? What are you counting on? David had armies. David had money. He had fame, he had wealth. There are things that he could count on. Oh, now, I am wealthy enough, I don't need nobody, I don't need any help, I have money. He had gold. He had wives, he had fame. He was a famous king. He had all things that people would crave in this world. But he says God is my strength.

Speaker 1:

Now, if we come to the New Testament, of course we know how Jesus promised to give us strength to all his disciples. In Acts, chapter 1, verse 8, he says but you shall receive power. You shall receive dunamis, dunamis, strength, power. After that, the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you will be my witnesses. It is Jesus saying I will come to strengthen you. I will send you a helper, one who will be with you forever to give you strength to be, and I will be with you. So we receive strength from the Lord with you. So we receive strength from the Lord. Jesus is our strength. God is our strength. Now we said let's look at an example of Paul, because we could go over and over, but we can just choose one man. Now, these are words we all love. I believe many God's people love it, so let's bring it here.

Speaker 1:

Philippians, chapter 4, verse 13. Philippians 4, verse 13,. Paul says I can do all things through Christ. Who strengthens me? There you go. God gives us power. Paul says I can do all things right. I have an assignment from the Lord. I have a work that God has called me. He set me apart for this. This is what God chose for me in my life, and God is the one who strengthens me. I can do all things through Christ. Who strengthens me? God, jesus is my strength. He gives me the strength and the power to leave my assignment to do what God called me to do.

Speaker 1:

You know, some people will say why are we working so hard? Why are we investing in the Lord? Why are we sacrificing so much? We investing in the Lord. Why are we sacrificing so much? It's because we have an assignment. We are doing it not in our own strength, not in our own power, but in the power of God. Beloved, you can rely on God. You can rely on God to deliver you, to give you the power to accomplish that which he has called you to do.

Speaker 1:

Colossians, chapter 1, verse 29,. It's right at the end there. This is what Paul says. To this end, I also labor, striving according to his working which works in me mightily. Now Paul has been talking about the assignment which God has given him to present Jesus Christ, to present the gospel. He says God set me apart for the gospel of his son and he has come to strengthen me. Verse 27, he says to them God will to make known what are the riches of the glory, of this mystery among the Gentiles which is Christ in you, the hope of glory, Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom that we may present every man, perfect in Christ Jesus.

Speaker 1:

To this end, for this cause, I labor. I love that word labor. My wife and I, we love that word labor. You know, when you're talking about labor. It is not easy. Labor is not easy. It's not just some little chores here and there. When you go to labor work, you will know what labor is.

Speaker 1:

Labor, he says to this end, I labor, I labor, striving. Look at those words that Paul is giving. Striving according to his working, which works in me mightily. Paul says I am laboring, I am striving, I am waking up, I am denying myself, I am suffering for Christ. But he says it is not I, it is according to his working. It is not I, it is according to his working. The Lord is working in me and his power works in me mightily. He works in me mightily. The power of God Beloved, we need the strength of the Lord. We need and God has promised to strengthen us, to give us grace for whatever situation we are facing, wherever we are going through, wherever we find ourselves, we can count on God to give us that shot, that boost of power, of ability. So when you feel like you want to give up, when you feel like you've come to the end of yourself, oh, just lift up yourself to the Lord, look to the Lord and he will give you strength, God has promised. If we pursue him, if we pursue godliness, he will strengthen us, no matter what.

Speaker 1:

When Paul was suffering you know, sometimes we are talking about this, you know. Does it mean we will not suffer? No, we go through suffering. Jesus said in this world you will have tribulation. You will have tribulation, but be of God's cheer, I have overcome the world. That's John, chapter 16, I believe, verse 33. So he says the world. That's John, chapter 16, I believe verse 33. So he says I will give you strength, I am with you, I am your strength.

Speaker 1:

When Paul had a thorn in the flesh, for example, 2 Corinthians, chapter 12 and verse 9, paul says I had a thorn. I pleaded with the Lord to remove it, to remove this. So we don't know what it is, we don't know what kind of sickness Paul had, but the Lord says he says my strength is made perfect in your weaknesses, my strength is made perfect. He says I had something that was tormenting me, a messenger of Satan. God allowed a messenger of Satan in my life to torment me, to keep me under. So I don't boast that I am so special that I can do all these miracles, that I'm presenting the gospel to the whole world. I am preaching the gospel of grace. No, no, no, it's not me, it's the Lord. And to keep me under from boasting of the revelations that I have here, god allowed Satan to have to send a messenger in me to torment me. To torment me, and he says oh, so painful. I pleaded with the Lord to take this one out.

Speaker 1:

The Lord spoke to Paul, 2 Corinthians, chapter 12,. Spoke to Paul and said my strength is made perfect in your weaknesses. So Paul says that I rejoice. Therefore, most gladly, I will rather boast in my infirmities that the power of Christ may rest over me. I am reading 2 Corinthians, chapter 12, in verse 9,. And he said to me my grace is sufficient for you. This is not grace for salvation. Understand that Grace is God's enablement, it's God's gift of power to help us in our type of need. My grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in your weaknesses. And so Paul says, therefore, most gladly, I will rather boast of my infirmities that the power of Christ may rest upon me. There is our word the power of Christ may rest upon me. There is our word, the power of Christ. There is the power of Christ that is made available for us in this life, no matter what you're going through, no matter where you were, no matter what God has allowed your way. Just be assured of this the God of heaven, jesus Christ, will give you the strength that you need. So we have a promise for the power in this life. All right, let me share another one and then I will close with that. All right, so we have seen the presence of God, the peace of God, the provision of God, the power of God. And last one for this life I will share is the protection of God. You can count on God's protection in this life. And again, that's a whole sermon when you talk about God's protection, god caring for us. We can go on and on and on. I'm sure if you are a reader of the Bible, you will know that we have an enemy. We have an enemy. Satan is out there seeking to destroy us, but we thank God that God has not left us to the whims and decisions of Satan, hallelujah.

Speaker 1:

Let's look at one example. Maybe in the Old Testament We'll look at Job, for example. You know, brother Job, right, job is a good example. Job, if you read Job chapter 1, job chapter 1, we're talking about godliness. You know, living a godly life and having a promise for the life that now is. Now, job was a righteous man.

Speaker 1:

Job, chapter 1,. I'll just read verse 1 and then I'll skip, because I don't want to take too long. Look at what it says. Job, chapter 1, verse 1. It says there was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright and one who feared God and shunned evil. That is the introduction of this man called Job Says. There was a man whose name was Job. He was a blameless man, an upright man, a man who feared God and shunned evil. If he saw this as evil, that was it. He will leave it alone. He shunned evil. He was a godly man.

Speaker 1:

Now, if you skip, we are told that there was a time sons of God were presenting themselves before the Lord. The sons of God here will be the angels of the Lord and we are told Satan himself also appeared. And in Job, chapter 1, verse 7, god asked Sima Qasim and the Lord said to to Satan from where do you come from? So Satan answered the Lord and said from going to and fro on the earth and from walking back and forth Verse 8,. Then I want you to carefully notice the testimony now of God about Job in verse 8.

Speaker 1:

Then the Lord said to Satan have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil. When I read that, I'm telling you, I just pray that God will have a testimony of me. Like that God says about Job. He says God is boasting before sinner. Have you considered my servant Job that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil? That's what God was saying. This was a godly man. This was a godly man. Now listen to the testimony of Satan. Listen to the testimony of Satan, verse 9.

Speaker 1:

So Satan answered the Lord and said Does Job fear God for nothing? Have you not made a hedge around him, around his household and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands and his possessions have increased in the land, but now stretch out your hand and touch all that he has and he will cast you to your face. So Satan is saying to God. He's saying to God Job does not fear you for nothing. Job is not a righteous man for nothing. But you, o God, have built an age, a hedge around him. You have built an age around him and his household and everything. In other words, satan tried.

Speaker 1:

Satan tried to get into the life of Job. He did. Of course he didn't love Job, he didn't like Job because Job was a righteous man, job was a godly man, job was a godly man. He didn't like him. He tried, but every time he attempted to go he found a hedge of protection. A hedge of protection.

Speaker 1:

So Job said certain things that Job loves God because of the things that God was doing for him, because of his blessing. And of course you know the story. God allowed him. He said just go, I've given everything he has to you, but do not touch his life, don't dare touch his life. You see, god gave a limit. Of course, god knew the end. Of course, go to the end and you will see the testimony of Job. So sometimes God can allow.

Speaker 1:

Okay, I don't want to get into the theology of the book of Job, but God allows. You know, he is a righteous man, he is a holy man, he is a godly man and he is protected. Satan has fled, but he is protected. He's not. But then God allows, allows trials to come. What am I saying? Trials will come, temptations will come. In the New Testament we are taught that you know, count it all. Joy when you go through trials and temptations of many kinds. For this come for the testing of the bills patience. And patience must finish its work so that you can be complete, lacking nothing. That's James, chapter 1. I'm posting James chapter 1, verse 2 there, right, but I'm saying this Just because we are righteous does not mean we will not go through strife.

Speaker 1:

I just quoted John 16, verse 33, where it says you know, jesus says in this world you will have tribulations, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. So here is Job, a righteous man, a holy man, and Satan is saying you have protected him. What I'm trying to say here is we have the protection of God. Believe me or not, child of God, believe me of God, friends, if Satan had a say over your life, if Satan had a power, wanted to do everything, none of us will be alive. You will not be living today. He comes to steal, to kill and to destroy. That's all his mission. Thank God we have Jesus. He says that I have come, that they may have life and have it abundantly, have it more, more abundantly. So our lives is beyond material things. We have joy we have, no matter what we are going. We may go through storms of life, you know, we go through stuff that tries to shake us, but we have a joy, we have a life. That is because our strength is not on things. We are looking to God.

Speaker 1:

Remember the verse in Psalms 34, I think it's Psalms 34, verse 7, right, yeah, this is coming to my heart. I have to read that. Psalms 37 and verse 7, psalm 34, I'm sorry, not 37. Psalms 34. Hold on a second here. Psalms 34 and verse number 7, right, here we go.

Speaker 1:

It says the angel of the Lord comes all around those who fear him and delivers them. The angel of the Lord, the angel of you, have an angel, the angel of the Lord, wherever we go. That's why you have to be very careful where you are going, because there's an angel I don't know how many, but there's an angel who is assigned to you as a child of God. He goes wherever I go. The angel of the Lord comes around those who fear him and he delivers them. So we have a deliverer. We have a deliverer. We may go into trials. We may go into some tempting situations, some difficult moments, but we have a deliverer. We have one who protects us. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers them from them all. Many are the afflictions of the righteous. That verse should be somewhere in Psalms 37. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers them from them all.

Speaker 1:

I have to preach a balanced gospel. I don't want you to get into it. Oh, because I am saved, because I'm pursuing goodness, then I'm not going to go through any trials, I'm not going to go through troubles. No, that's not in the Bible. No, that's not the gospel. The good news we are sharing is that we have a deliverer. No matter what we are going through, no matter what circumstances, what comes our way, we go through it with a deliverer. We have a deliverer, we have a song and even if our lives should end in any way, we are not scared. So, no matter what we are going through, we have the joy. We can go through storms of this life because we have a deliverer, we have a protector.

Speaker 1:

The Bible says no temptation has come upon you except that which is common to man. And with every trial. God gives us the strength to bear under it and he provides a way out. Maybe you're fighting some temptation. You need power to deliver you. You just lead on Christ. Maybe you're being drawn.

Speaker 1:

When you're going through a very tempting thing, something that is tempting you to walk away from the Lord, to walk or to commit a trespass or a sin, you look to God. You turn to God for strength. Maybe you have been delivered, and those temptations of deliverance from something, whether it is an addiction or it is something evil, and you're being drawn towards it. When do you get your strength to overcome that temptation? The power is from God. So we are saying God gives us power to live a godly life, god gives us strength to overcome. God now delivers us, he protects us, he delivers, he snatches us from the enemy. Sometimes we are assailed, beloved, we are assailed by thoughts of evil. It's like wow, the enemy comes in like a flood into our minds and you're thinking evil. You're caught in a circle of evil. Where do you turn to? You turn to the Lord. You begin to exercise, do spiritual exercise.

Speaker 1:

We say exercise yourself towards godliness. You begin to do exercise. You need strength at that time. You need strength in that moment. So what do you do? You rely on God, you turn to God, you call on the Lord, the Lord, deliver me. And you begin to do those exercises that we mentioned. How do you exercise? You start singing songs, you start meditating on the word, you start praising God, praising God, and as you're fighting, you find the strength of the Lord coming in and you deliver, you are set free. Hallelujah. We can go on and on. Beloved.

Speaker 1:

Now, next time we come, when we pick up on this particular verse, we will look at the other version.

Speaker 1:

It's very sweet. It says that Paul says that godliness has a promise for the life that now is and the life that is to come. So we will focus now on the life that is to come. When we come back with this teaching. All right, we will look at what are the promises for the life that is to come. When we come back with this teaching. All right, we will look at what are the promises for the life that is to come. Oh, it's so sweet. I can't wait for that and I hope you also will want to be there as we share with together. But I've only shared five the promises for the life that now is Very sweet the presence of God, the peace of God, the provision of God, the power of God and the protection of Allah. May the Lord bless you as you exercise yourself towards godliness, knowing that it is not for naught. There is a price, there is a promise, and God keeps his promise. God bless you. I'll see you in our next teaching.
